Set a live watch alert for January 7 at 1:30 p.m. ET: President-elect Biden is presenting nominees, including Judge Merrick Garland for Attorney General, to the Department of Justice. Garland was named by then-President Obama to the Supreme Court in 2016, but his appointment was blocked by Republican senators.
The statement by Mr. Biden comes after pro-Trump rioters violated the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, where the 2020 Electoral College votes were counted by senators, a perfunctory last step prior to the inauguration of Mr. Biden.
Democrats were also predicted to take control of the Senate on Wednesday after their runoff elections in Georgia were won by Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.
The following candidates will also be introduced by Mr. Biden:
- Lisa Monaco as Deputy Prosecutor General
- Vanita Gupta for General Attorney Associate
- Kristen Clarke, Assistant Attorney General for the Division of Civil Rights
